Volunteer Center Southwark offers training throughout the year on all aspects of volunteer management from developing new volunteer programmes to dealing with difficult volunteers. Training sessions can be a half or full day and we also run interactive workshops.
Half-day training courses last for 3 hours and are aimed at volunteer managers, who are new to managing volunteers or are in the process of moving away from informal to more formal volunteer programmes and cover the following topics:
- Introduction to Volunteer management
- Volunteer Support and Supervision
- Volunteer Recruitment and Induction
- Volunteering and the law
- Inclusive Volunteering
- Mental Health Awareness
- Health and safety in volunteering
Share and Learn events are 1.5 hour sessions for volunteer managers who already have some experience in managing volunteers but would like to recap or expand on existing knowledge. The sessions are active problem solving sessions and give attendees the opportunity to bring problems or challenges they currently face to the table and cover the following topics:
- Creating good role descriptions and volunteer packs
- Problem Volunteers
Action Learning is a long established and internationally recognised development method, involving a small group (a ‘set’) of 5 – 6 participants that meets over several months. The small group provides challenge and support; individuals each tackle their own problem and implement their own solutions. To take part in this you must commit to attending 5 half day sessions over 6 months.
This is an effective and productive way to explore practical solutions to problems and gain the expertise, support and advice of peers in volunteer management.
Courses start: October 2011 and April 2012
For more information or to book a place at the taster session or on a course e-mail Truly Johnston, truly@volunteercentres.org.uk
What participants have said about Action Learning:
“I came away with lots of practical ideas which have benefitted me in the workplace. This type of learning was particularly useful as we were able to address issues which were current for us so it was very well targeted – much more beneficial than a course would have been.”
“The process was a very useful one and has helped me in my role. It has also had an impact on how I mentor others.”
